Bad food, bad me

July 15, 2008

An online friend of mine recently told me to chill when I gave him a hard time about the unhealthy food served at a social event he attended. I guess that in some circles I’d be considered a health-food fanatic although nothing could be further from the truth.

The day I flew home after a vacation to visit family, I had a hot dog. A big, meaty dog on a white bun. Then later a slice of sausage pizza. Ugh. I didn’t feel so well last night after my bad eating day, mostly because my body doesn’t like too much salt. And it’s used to lots of fruits and veggies. Occasionally, I am lazy about eating. Having the right foods in moderation involves some planning.

Thanks to bad weather in Atlanta, I ate food I’d have been better off not having. At the airport snack bar, I chose the pizza instead of the banana and yogurt. Part of the problem is wanting to treat myself when I’m feeling punished by being stuck waiting at an airport. The problem with a banana and yogurt is that I know I’ll be hungry an hour later, most likely when I’m mid-flight with no other option than a ridiculously small bag of airline pretzels to quench my hunger pains.

I feel so much better when I eat less salty, lower-fat foods. I like my vegetarian meals best of all. At lunch with friends over the weekend I had a marvelous salad of mixed greens with bleu cheese, pecans, mandarin oranges, purple onion and strawberries. Oh, it was yummy. Now that isn’t exactly health food but it was delicious and better than a Big Mac and fries. At least I think it was.

    poor martha,
you try and treat yourself by being a little bit bad with your diet, and look what happens: “ugh.”

Got something to say?
